Once a year, society sets aside one special day to honour the support personnel that keep our companies running. It’s called Administrators’ Day and it generally falls in the last week of April.
It’s a special day for us here at RE/MAX Garden City Realty because our administrative staff are very special indeed. In fact, they are amazing! We’ve taken a bit of liberty with the event by moving it from April to June. And the motivation for that transition is weather.
For many years Administrators’ Day began at each office with a limo ride. Whisking our lovely ladies (for the most part our staff were female) off to a fabulous restaurant where we all enjoyed each other’s company and since our offices stretched from Burlington/Waterdown through Niagara sometimes these people did most of their interactions strictly by phone. Great to get together for an evening. Over the years we gathered at the Old Mill in Ancaster, the Edgewater in Stoney Creek, the Keg in St. Catharines, as well as enjoying dinner theatre at Stage West in Mississauga, at Old Port Dalhousie, and at the Casino in Niagara Falls. But more recently we’ve changed the venue and format to a backyard BBQ at the home of the Quirks. And hence the change to June.
Over the past few years (Covid years excepted) the Quirks have been doing some travelling, and each subsequent Administrators’ Day has had a destination theme. We’ve had Chinese, Thai, Italian, Western (a Tribute to Nashville), and just at the outset of Covid we were slated to enjoy a Greek theme. That event got postponed to this year.
In preparation, Wayne and Deb had done some shopping in Athens. Costumes wise everyone was given a black and gold TOGA t-shirt. Finding those apparently was an event in itself involving several shops at the foot of the Acropolis where for the most part, English was a foreign language. Also, on the shopping list were gold tiara’s, Greek table clothes, accent dishes and so on.
The event centered around an Olympic theme. There were five events in total. Discuss throw (ring toss), shot put (bean bag throw), javelin throw (lawn darts), archery (hatchet throw) and washer toss. Competition was fierce because three amazing prizes were up for grabs.
Tabulation of points ended with a two-way tie for First (Gold) and a two-way tie for Third (Bronze). Gold had a tie-breaker and Cindy Kindree from our Grimsby office took Gold and Jim Holiko, master of I.T. picked up Silver. We decided to leave Bronze as a two-way tie, and taking the honours were Megan Beam, wizard of Marketing & Creative, and Debbie Berriault, Transaction Co-ordinator.
Tables were set up in the great room and dinner was a totally Greek theme, dolmades, hummus appetizers, tzatziki, pitas, meat skewers, rice, potatoes and salad, all catered by Joe Feta’s and with dessert (Olympic flame torches) created and supplied by our very own Matt Shaw.
The weather co-operated fully. Not always the case for our parties and events. After supper we all gathered again in the back patio for drinks and laughs. Bartending was looked after by our own Dave Quirk.
Yes, we’ve enjoyed a lot of Administrator styles of events over the years. But general consensus seems to be the backyard theme parties provide the best opportunity to relax, interact and yes – compete. So, Administrators’ Day 2023 is now in the history books, but you know it really again re-enforces the fact, we are blessed with the best support group in the business. Bar none! Thanks guys.
