February 2025 - Nuggets - 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off

Our agents are outstanding salespeople. We know that. Working with clients. Finding the treasure property. Negotiating the deal. Simply the best. And when it comes to support personnel nobody comes close to the talent and dedication of our crew. What you may not know, however, is that in addition to their obvious talents, lurks in many cases superb cooking skills.

Last year, during Super Bowl Weekend we decided to put these cooking skills to the test by hosting a chili cook-off to coincide with Super Bowl. And the event was such a success we decided to host it again. Same weekend. Super Bowl. Same two teams as 2023. And the same rules.

Each contestant was to cook up their own personal secret recipe for chili. All the fares would be on display, each with a unique name which gave some clue to their contents. Buffalo, A-1, traditional etc. It would be a ‘blind test’. No one was identified as the developer of any particular offering. Scorecards were distributed and agents were invited to try the various batches and rate them on a scale of 1-5 according to taste, aroma, uniqueness, texture and heat.

Of course, there was more on the menu to tempt the taste buds than just chili. Rolls, Caesar salad,

devilled eggs, chips and dip, desserts galore. Nobody went hungry. Especially after each participant was invited to try all 10 or so entries.

An event like this involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Not just in preparation of the chili, but also in re-arranging and decorating the training centre/diner. The theme of course was football. And everything from tablecloths and wall art to accessory dishes and hash marks on the floor were in this theme. A special thank you goes out to Michelle Bruce, our social media guru and Deb Quirk, administrator for all the work they put in to make this event a reality.

The event ended with three winners being announced. Third place went to Rachael Mathews, Transactions Co-ordinator with her ‘Creamy Chicken Chili’ masterpiece. Second place was captured by Dave Quirk, Agent and Corporate Trainer for his creation ‘Chili AI’, based on a recipe procured electronically. This year, the top spot went to Julie Pontello, again an Agent with RGC whose creation was entitled ‘Avocado Chili’.

At the time of this writing, the event is now in the history books. An hour after the festivities ended the training centre was rendered back to its original condition. Ready for next week’s training sessions. I think all who participated thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We appreciate our agents and staff as…well agents and staff. But it’s good to know that in addition to their primary skills, there’s never a reason for anyone to go hungry around RE/MAX.
